Brookfield Zoo
Brookfield Zoo, ideally situated in Brookfield in Illinois, west of the city of Chicago is open all seven days a week all through the year. And now it becomes a must-see attraction from Chicago travel. This zoo is located on the 216 acres of creatively landscaped spaces that features more than 2000 animals.
The Chicago Zoo was first opened in the year 1934 and soon became the world famous destination for its usage of the natural barriers like moats instead of the typical cages. The Brookfield Zoo, Chicago also featured the very first Giant Panda in the entire United States, one of which, the Su Lin has now bee taxidermied to be displayed in the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago.
In the year 1960, the Brookfield Zoo constructed the first fully indoor exhibit of the dolphin and then in the 1980s, this popular zoo introduced the Tropic World, the rain forest indoor stimulation along with the largest zoo indoor exhibit in the entire world.
One of the Brookfield Zoo's most renowned present resident is the Binti Jua, the Western lowland gorilla. When a very young boy accidentally fell into a gorilla exhibit of the Tropic World in the year 1996, the Binti Jua very brilliantly cradled the little boy and safely brought him to the trainers of the zoo.
This incident gained international acclaim thereby inspiring the much active debate as to if the actions of Binti Jua were the direct result of her training that she received from the zoo keepers or due to the instinctive sense of this animal's altruism.
The exhibits of this zoo like the Baboon Island, Reptile House, Wolf Woods, Australia House and Pachyderm House are sure to offer great pleasure to the zoo visitors. There is even the kid's petting zoo along with the Play Zoo in which the families can easily interact closely with the zoo animals.
Sure to serve as the favorite is the exhibit of Topic World that stimulates the tropical rain forest featuring birds, monkey and many more like the simulated thunderstorm. Another striking quality of the Brookfield Zoo is its Dolphin Presentation that is a sure not to be missed one. The zoo even highlights all types of dining options as well as gift shops for the tourists.
The real estate of this Brookfield Zoo is specially owned by Cook County Forest Preserve District and the zoo is carefully managed by Chicago Zoological Society.
Another must see zoo animal was the Olga, an Atlantic walrus. This female animal was actually a favorite of a large number of Chicago IL travel guests between the years of 1962 to 1988 thereby entertaining the visitors with her antics. She is still remembered by the bronze statue situated in the present sea mammal exhibit of the zoo.
