Cadillac Palace Theater

As a famous Chicago travel attraction, Cadillac Palace Theater is a Chicago based theatre which is owned by Nederlander Organization. You may be familiar with its old name-The New Palace Theatre. This beautiful theatre is operated by Broadway in Chicago.

When it was opened for the first time in 1926, it was called 'The New Palace Theatre'. It was converted into a rock avenue in 1984 and was even renamed as the Bismarck Theatre. The new Cadillac Palace Theatre comes after a renovation in 1999.

The theatre's naming rights were owned by Cadillac that time and hence the name 'Cadillac Theatre'. 2344 people can sit in the theatre at a time. The theatre which is located at a prime location has a large economic impact on Chicago.

The design of the Cadillac Palace Theater was done by Rapp Brothers. They have designed a lot of other famous theaters also. Huge decorative mirrors and the violet and white marbles used for the walls and flooring is the best attraction of the theater. The walls are decorated with wood and golden leafing. A row of well made arches add to the glamour of the theater.

A very interesting yet tricky thing occurred during World War-2 in the Cadillac Theater. At that time US government acquired brass metal from all the theater's around to melt it down to make shells. But the Cadillac Palace Theater owners painted all the brass in white and tricked the government officials. During the recent renovation, people realized that the white painted pillars were of brass made and restored its original color and glory.

Great artists like Jimmy Durante, Mae West etc have come and performed in the theater as it was opened as a part of Vaudeville's Orpheum Circuit. But the interest towards vaudeville was lost soon and the theater got converted into a movie theater. It happened in 1931.

Elton John had performed in the theater and it opened the doors of Cadillac Palace Theater to pre broad way tours and world premiers. Many broad way tours passed through the Cadillac Theater. 'The Producers', 'The Pirate Queen' and 'The Color Purple' are some of the premiers staged in the theater. Mary Poppins is the latest in the fray as it will begin its journey from Cadillac Palace Theater in March 2009.

As per the audience reviews, Cadillac Palace Theater has a good feedback. People like its traditional look. According to them the architecture of the theater itself creates a fantastic mood to be there.
