Chicago History

Chicago history is very interesting and inspiring. Jesuit Jacques Marquette from France and Louis Jolliet, a Canadian explorer discovered Chicago in 1673. The name Chicago is a French word Miami-Illinois which means a plant in Chicago River. This place was considered to be a resident for Mascountens, Algonquians and Miami peoples.

While we turn over the pages of Chicago history, location of Chicago travel city was the only reason for it to face some problems. It was a short waterlogged ground like archaic between the Des Plaines River and Chicago River, this attracted the explorers from France to great extent.

These explorers realised that this place would act as a great transportation hub which can help them in many ways. So for this reason the mission of guardian angel was built in 1696 in order to Christianize the locals. But all these portage and missionaries were most of the time abandoned due to frequent raiding in 1720 as a result of Fox Wars.

People started to settle in Chicago in 1781 by some African American called Jean Baptist Point du Sable from Santo Domingo. In olden days the banks and the area near the mouth of Chicago River was occupied by the people especially for trading purposes. But now, it's been occupied by military base.

The reason for arrival of military base is due to the frequent attack of Fort by Native American people. When the chief Black Hawk was arrested in 1832, the problem came to an end. After certain development, Chicago was announced as a town in 1833 and the population reached to 4710. There were boundaries assigned to the new city, which were State Streets, Kinzie and Madison.

Chicago was announced as a city in the year 1837 after which there were enormous development in railways; roadways came into being in 1870. After these development was when Chicago really started to boom within population over 300,000. Chicago history proves that there were many environmental problems.

Many pointed out Chicago as a filthiest city that is in America. Also there were many disease carrying insects due to the prairie. There were no proper road or infrastructure so there was mud all over .the roads were covered by dirt and it was hazardous too.

But in 1840 there was a rapid change in the Chicago history where this city became the ninety second populous city among United States. Later Chicago was known as the largest city by 1857 with over 90,000 people.
