The Chicago landmarks are selected based on some of the criteria which may include historic aspect, architectural design, cultural, artistic, social values, and economical. Once a building is added to the Chicago landmark it would be passed to the Chicago landmark ordinance.

If there are any alterations to be made except the routine maintenance like demolition then it should be permitted by the Landmark Commission.
