Chicago is rich in its sports culture as sport lies in the heart of each and every Chicagoan. It is a city which witnessed only primitive sports earlier. But since 1850, a sub culture emerged with drinking and gambling along with billiards and horse races.

Towards the civil war, new entertainments like boxing, baseball and cricket emerged. Salon based ports like boxing, billiards, dog fighting and bear baiting began to be viewed by clergy, middle class people and businessmen. Later, sports got a new respectability with fresh ideas of athleticism and morality. Baseball, foot ball, bicycling and athletics became the identity of Chicago life.

The Memorial Day is an observed holiday in the city of Chicago, IL. The holiday is observed to honour the veterans who died while fighting for the country. The city of Chicago observes it by paying honour to all those soldiers who died in their pursuit to defend the country.

The holiday also includes the recognition of the Illinois Gold Star families during Commemoration. It also pays tribute to the residents who died in man terrorist attacks like the recent attack of Pentagon and conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan.

This year the holiday will be observed on May 29th and will feature parades by the Drum and Bugle Corps and military etc.
