The Field museum of Chicago was initially known as Columbian Museum of Chicago. It was associated with history, science, archeology and art.
During 1905, the name of the museum was changed and it came to be known as Field Museum of Natural History in honor of Marshall Field, the first significant benefactor of the museum. The other reason for the name change was to reflect the emphasis in natural sciences.
Previously, the museum was situated at Jackson Park. The core of the museum's collections is anthropological and biological collections. The collections have been increasing year after year. The museum's natural history library has over 250000 volumes.
