The opera house was bought by Lyric Chicago Opera and since then it has hosted some of the most famous Broadway shows, and celebrated the shows of world famous music artists which includes the names of Frank Sinatra and Bjork.

The foundation history of Civic Opera House is not less than a drama itself enacted out in the real life. Samuel Insull built this opera house just because his daughter was not hired by Metropolitan Opera, New York. The space for Civic Opera house was rented by Chicago Lyric Opera which later purchased it.

Insull handed over designing work to architecture company Graham, Anderson, Probst, & White. The earlier building was in the shape of a large chair where Insull's daughter could sit. This was mockingly remarked as "Insull's throne."

The architectural firm assigned architecture of the Civic Opera House to their famous designer Henry Hering. The architecture of opera house was modeled after the fashion of a movie 'Citizen Kane' of Orson Welles.

In 1993, Civic Opera house was sold to Chicago Lyric Opera and the building's infrastructure; both the exterior and interior went a huge renovation and turned it into the most beautiful architectural monument.

Seats were changed and refurnished, carpets were changed and new ones took the floor. The Gilt was painted brilliantly. The whole of the refurbishment took almost three years of span and the new Civic Opera House was ready to welcome its audience in 1996.

Renowned Interior designer and Muralist Jules Guerin crafted the interior decor in such a brilliant way that one gets enamored by the beauty and elegance of every art form visible in the structure of opera house.

He also detailed the design of lobby that can afford the reception of around 700 standing audience. The main auditorium Ardis Krainik theatre is named after its late director and is available for various galas, ceremonies including graduation, receptions, productions, and presentations.
