DuSable Museum is a storehouse of history, artifacts, and arts relating to the African-American knowledge and traditions. It was named after the first person who permanently settled in Chicago. The museum was first established at the home Dr. Margaret Burruoghs in 1961 and later settled at the present building in 1973.

The museum has collections of an extensive variety of artifacts which include a successful collection of paintings, sculpture and drawings by Africans and African-American artists. The extension of the 25,000 square foot wing in 1993 was named after the only Africa-American mayor of the city. The museum also has an award shop, an extension program of society connected activities such as poetry, music series, jazz and other cultural activities, and a study library.
