The University of Chicago is a coeducational research, private university that is located in Chicago Illinois USA. It was founded by the American Baptist Education Society with a major donation from John D. Rockefeller who is a philanthropist and oil magnate. It was incorporated in 1890 and in 1981; William Rainey Harper became the first president. The first classes in this university were held in 1892.
The campus consists of the College of The University of Chicago, a number of undergraduate programs, an interdisciplinary committee that is organized into 4 divisions, 6 professional schools and a school for continuing education. The University enrolls around 14,000 students every year. It is famous for its devotion to intellectualism and academic scholarship. The University is affiliated with 85 Nobel prizes and 45 Rhodes Scholars.
The University takes research very seriously and it supports, manages and engages two federal research centers where innovative science is underway. These are the Fermi Accelerator Laboratory and the Argonne National Laboratory. These laboratories attract over $900 million for research funding. The research that is conducted here contributes to the nation's energy, environmental and national security.
