Mr. & Mrs. William O. Goodman, parents of the demised playwright made donation of $350,000 to the Art Institute of Chicago for the foundation of a professional repertory company and school of drama as a tribute to their son. The inauguration of the Theatre took place on October 20, 1925.
Three famous plays of Kenneth Sawyer Goodman- 'The Green Scarf', 'The Game Of Chess', and 'Back Of the Yards' were staged on the inauguration day of Goodman Theatre. The public opening for the Goodman Theatre commenced on October 22, 1925 with John Galsworthy' famous play 'The Forest'.
In 1992, Goodman Theatre was honored with the award of The Regional Theater Tony Award. This award brought wider recognition to the Goodman Theatre forayed into broad world of theatrics with a bang. Theater got shifted to new location of Chicago's theater district, 170N.Dearborn.
The new theater building constituted two large auditoriums named after the Goodman family members who still makes major chunk of donation for the theater. The two auditoriums are named as Albert and Owen. The remarkable change has been made in the area of acoustics and visual effects in the new building of the Theatre with the aid of modern techniques, which was absent from the old one
Goodman Theatre produced the first play, 'Radio Golf' from the ten part series of August Wilson's 'The Pittsburgh Cycle' in 2007. This is the first Theatre that hosted the production of all the ten plays of 'The Pittsburgh cycle'.
