Harris Theater has 1525 seating capacity and is mainly used for music and art performances. It is located near the northern side of Millenium Park. It is basically a loop community area for visitors on Chicago travel. The original name of the theater is a bit long. Joan W and Irwing B Harry Theater for Music and Dance is the full name of it.
At first, only medium performances were showcased at the theater, but it began offering subscription to a lot of travelling performances also recently. It was constructed in 2002-2003 season.
The Harris Theater is a privately owned institution. Varieties of music and dance performances were done at the venue. Ballet Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Sinfonietta, Mexican Fine arts centre museum and Music of the Baroque are some of the founding companies of the Harris Theater.
The most interesting aspect of the construction of the Harris Theater is that, it is located underground in the basement of church. It has an underground passage to the adjacent underground Millenium Park Garage which is convenient for audiences andn visitors on Chicago IL travel to park their vehicles.
It also has enough backstage facilities and rehearsal rooms. The whole theater was designed by Hammond, Bebby and Rupert. It flaunts one of the best architecture of that time and even won the American Architecture Awards for 2002. The metallic and Neon floors designed in the lobby are the marvels of creativity.
The theater has a roof top terrace which can be fully utilized for private events booked by people who want to host a party or family function there.
The theater was designed according to a study from John.D and Catherine McArthur Foundation. The study asked for the need of a flexible, modern platform to perform the arts. The theaters in Chicago were built many years back which could not be used for new kind of art forms.
Since the day of its inauguration Harris Theater has been a platform for the launching artistic forms to delight the senses of Chicago audience. When the theater was undergoing construction, the company got a loan of $24 million sanctioned. This is the largest single monetary commitment ever done for an entertainment theater.
