Chicano DuSable Museum features a permanent and a rich collection of books, documents, artifacts, manuscripts, rare books, films, recordings and civil rights memorabilia. The museum remains open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays, it operates from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A self guided tour of the DuSable Museum consists of these:

-Founder Hall. It houses a collection of mosaic portraits created by Thomas Miller in honor of the educators, artists, and leaders who helped Dr. Margaret Burroughs and Charles Burroughs build the museum.

- DuSable Bust: Here there are biographical notes of the earliest non Native American, Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable.

- Ames Auditorium: Here there is a centerpiece created by Robert W. Ames, which displays the history of African Americans from 17th century onwards.

- African art and artifacts from the five different areas of Africa.

- Harold Lee Washington Wing: This is dedicated to the 42nd Mayor of Chicago.

- Masterpiece Gallery: This houses a collection of paintings and sculptures of many African American artists.

- Lower Level Gallery: It consists of exhibits highlighting the career and life of Lerone Bennett, Jr, the editor of Ebony Magazine.

- Newly acquired items: There is also a portion in the museum where you can stop on your way, in which new items were added recently, one being a photograph at the Kennedy School of Government.

DuSable Museum is a storehouse of history, artifacts, and arts relating to the African-American knowledge and traditions. It was named after the first person who permanently settled in Chicago. The museum was first established at the home Dr. Margaret Burruoghs in 1961 and later settled at the present building in 1973.
