What is the History of the Meigs Field Chicago

The Meigs Field Chicago is an airport which was operating between December 1948 and March 2003. This airport on the Northerly Island became the busiest airport of the country by the year 1955. The runaway of the airport was almost 3900 feet in length and 150 feet in width. The south end of the runway had four helipads. At the north end of the runway the Adler Planetarium was located. The airport was officially named Merrill C. Meigs Field on June 30 1950. Over the years there were many changes incorporated in the airport like the air traffic control tower in the year 1952, a terminal building was included in the year 1961, increasing the length of the runway and many such developments which made it a premier airport of the country.

The airlines that were a part of Meigs Field were: Air Illinois, Britt Airways, Great Lakes Airlines, Hub Airlines and Ozark Airlines. On 30th March 2003, Mayor Danley, destroyed the runway of the airport citing safety issues. The Northerly Island is now a park where visitors come for a stroll.
