International House at the University of Chicago

The International House at the University of Chicago is used by advanced undergraduates, graduate and professional students. It was created to promote cross cultural relationships, understanding, mutual respect and friendship particularly among international students including the United States. It fosters relationships on the part of the people of Chicago to individuals of different nations and backgrounds.

It was offered in 1932 as a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The dormitory is noted to have accommodated many famous scholars, scientists and artists including Enrico Fermi and Langston Hughes. The building has housed over 30,000 people since the time it opened its doors. It is an alternative to the Chicago hotels.

The International House is a member of the International Houses Worldwide and is recognized all over the world. It is used by the greater part of the city of Chicago as an international cultural center for programs of great diversity. The activities that are conducted range from international films and politics to music and dance. The building hosts international debates and discussions that deal with world issues.
