The Shakespeare Theater was founded by Barbara Gaines in 1986 as Shakespeare Workshop. Later its name was changed to Shakespeare Theater. Hamlet, King Lear, and Timon of Athens were some of the initial plays that were portrayed by the Shakespeare Theater.
In 2000, Shakespeare Theater was shifted to its own seven-story building at Navy Pier. The first performance at this venue was that of Eric Idle's novel, 'The Road to Mars'. The Shakespeare Theater has a seating capacity of 510 which has high quality sound capacity and a beautifully structured stage.
Stage of the theater is vast in expanse which aids in delivering great performances uninhibited by constraints on space. A theater with 200 seats blackbox upstairs space is also there, which is for small yet popular productions.
Team Shakespeare programme from the theater is the largest arts education program in the state. The Shakespeare theatre has grown to the third largest in the mid-west. 50000 students go through the Team Shakespeare programme yearly. The programme journeys through matinee performances, touring programs etc.
