Steppenwolf Theater
Steppenwolf Theater is one of the most renowned Chicago theatres and has been honored with Tony Award. It was established in 1974 by Jeff Perry, Gary Sinise, and Terry Kinney. The first auditorium was established in the basement of church located in Highland Park area of Illinois, Chicago. A Hermen Hesse novel has inspired the owners to put the title as Steppenwolf.
Six years after the opening of the Steppenwolf theater, it moved into a 134 seat theater which was located on the Broadway Avenue. And, in 1991, the company moved into the present venue at Halsted Street. It has a subscription of around 20000 now. Here, the theater took a momentous leap and has become famous for the performing arts.
The Steppenwolf Theater presented Paul Zindel's 'And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little' in its inaugural season which opened the stage for many other great performances. Sam Sheperd's 'True West' was one of the productions to travel around United States. It was performed first in 1982.
In December 2007, it faced a small stage hand strike, but it opened its first new play in Imperial Theater, Broadway. It was one of the most exciting plays the city has seen in years. Later, Osage country was listed as number one in Time's Top Ten Theater performances that won a great recognition for Steppenwolf Theater.
The company has lot of new plays initiatives. It has been a launch pad of several new writers whose plays were successfully hosted in this theater. World premiere of 'The grapes of wrath' was also presented in the theater.
The most interesting thing about the Steppenwolf Theater is that it provides opportunity to the young theatrics students to do internships which helps in strengthening their skills along with the study of the course. This can enhance their taste in the field of performing arts and carry the culture of the city to the next generation.
The company is currently in its 32nd season. The Tony Award for Regional Theater Excellence and The National Medal of Arts are some of the biggest awards that the theater has received for its invaluable contribution to the world of theatrics in Chicago.
So when you travel Chicago, never forget to step into the Steppenwolf Theater which is contributing the most to the performing world. As new art forms evolve, it works a laboratory for them and supports their evolution. Thus, the theater has achieved a level of a performing arts university.
